What we’ve learned along the way
Having lived with Shar Pei for years, we’ve experienced the joy and love they bring us every day. And when they entered their senior years, we’ve learned to adjust to their changing needs. They may move a little slower and need extra care, but these golden years really have deepened our bond in ways we never expected.
When our Shar Pei started showing signs of slowing down, it was a bittersweet moment. There is the greatfulness that it’s given to them to reach this respectable age. But also the reality that the dogs that once chased each other around the yard now prefer napping in their favorite sunspots. Frodo, our senior boy, who used to be a bundle of energy, especially slowed down after an accident left him with arthritis. He still loves to roam the yard and nearby fields, but now he does so at a gentler pace, savoring every step.
To support them in this phase, we adjusted their diets. Food with fewer calories, but packed with the right nutrients, has been key to keeping them healthy without the risk of weight gain, which can worsen joint issues. For Frodo, we added supplements like glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids, which have made a noticeable difference. Despite his arthritis, he still greets each day with a wagging tail and determination to explore his surroundings. Everything at his own speed, of course!
Though Frodo has slowed down, he still loves his daily walks. It’s not about covering distance anymore but enjoying the moment. Watching him roam the yard or walk through the fields brings us as much joy as it does him. His pace may have changed, but the curiosity in his eyes hasn’t. He still loves to sniff every corner, and sometimes we catch him lying in the grass, happily watching the world go by.
To keep our older shar pei comfortable, we’ve adapted our home by adding orthopedic beds, underfloor heating, and anti-slip rugs. These small changes have made a big difference. Frodo’s favorite spot used to be the couch, but now it is his orthopedic bed, which helps with his arthritis, especially on colder days. The underfloor heating keeps him warm, and the rugs give him confidence to move around the house without slipping. These adjustments have ensured that even though his pace has slowed, he still moves comfortably and happily around the home.
Vet visits have become more frequent as our Shar Pei have aged. Frodo’s arthritis was diagnosed after his accident, and regular check-ups, including bloodwork and x rays help us stay on top of managing his pain and mobility.
We take our seniors for check-ups at least twice a year. These visits allow us to monitor for age-related conditions like heart disease or vision problems. Routine blood work has become part of our normal routine, helping us catch potential issues early. For Frodo, early intervention has been key to managing his arthritis, ensuring he still enjoys his favorite walks with minimal discomfort.
Keeping the skin and fur clean has always been part of our routine, but it’s even more important now that they’re seniors. Many shar pei do not like a bath, but Frodo loves his “spa sessions”. We gently clean his fur and check his skin for inflammation. These quiet bonding moments have become something we all look forward to.
We also keep their ears clean and check their teeth regularly, especially after Frodo had a small ear inflammation last year.
Even though they’ve slowed down physically, our Shar Pei’s minds are still sharp. Frodo may not chase mice anymore, but he’s just as clever when it comes to figuring out interactive treat dispensers. One of our favorite memories was when we introduced him to a new treat dispenser toy. We thought it would take him a while to figure it out, but in true Frodo fashion, he had the treats out in no time, his face filled with satisfaction. These moments remind us that even as they age, they still enjoy a good challenge, and it’s just as rewarding for us to see their excitement.
Tosca is our 12 year old girl, she has never been the sporty type. But she loves car rides. She joins us in the car whenever possible. That dog really goes places and all the impressions are great to stimulate her mind.
We’ve learned that keeping a consistent routine is key to helping our Shar Pei feel secure. Frodo, in particular, appreciates the predictability of his days. Feeding times, walks, and bedtime happen at the same time every day, and that structure helps reduce any anxiety he might feel as he grows older.
There have been times when Frodo seemed more anxious, especially when he’s feeling stiff. On those days, we try different calming techniques like soft music or extra cuddles, and they work wonders. One evening, after a cold wet day, Frodo climbed up beside us on the couch, put his head on our lap, and let out the longest, most contented sigh. It’s moments like these that remind us of the importance of emotional support, especially for our senior dogs.
Caring for senior Shar Pei has been a journey filled with love, patience, and plenty of lessons. Yes, they move a little slower, but they’ve shown us that there’s beauty in taking life at a slower pace. Every quiet walk, every gentle nuzzle, and every shared moment is a reminder of the deep bond we have with them.
They may not be the energetic pups they once were, but their joy for life hasn’t diminished. With the right care, like adjusting the diet, giving gentle exercise, regular vet visits, and making the home a comfortable place, they continue to live a happy and fulfilling life. These golden years have only strengthened our connection, and we’re grateful for every day we get to spend with our beloved Shar Pei, who still love to explore, one slow step at a time.
